whythawk@gmail.comGavin joined SHAWCO (The Students Health And Welfare Centres Organisation) while an undergraduate at the University of Cape Town in 1994. He developed and implemented his ideas for economic development while working in impoverished communities around Cape Town.
Gavin completed his first degree in Microbiology and Biochemistry in 1994 and worked briefly for UCT Medical School conducting policlonal replication. He then went on to work for Unisys as a network implementer. Gavin returned to UCT in 1996 and completed his Electrical Engineering degree in 1998.
Gavin’s engineering thesis on marine remotely operated vehicles won the UK-based Underwater Magazine’s international award for design in 1998 and continues to excite interest around the world.
Gavin started Whythawk Development in 1999 continuing, professionally, his lifelong passion for community economic development.
Gavin is interested in the philosophy of entrepreneurship and has presented numerous workshops and seminars exploring the nature of creativity, innovation and the strategic art of leading change. His popular UCT course, The Art of War, combines geopolitics and the nature of individuals in a changing world. He lectures on Business Strategy for the department of Management Studies and has commented on the subject for a host of journals, newspapers and radio stations.
In 2002, Gavin participated in the reality television program, The Sanlam Money Game. He did not win.
Gavin is extremely adventurous and enjoys hiking, diving, sailing and sea kayaking. He loves travelling and has backpacked through Israel, India, Malaysia, Nepal, Tanzania, Madagascar, Namibia, Malawi, Mozambique, Chile, Peru and Brazil.
Gavin is an amateur photographer and staged his first solo exhibition (Gullible’s Travels) of travel photographs in January 2003. He is learning to play the guitar. After two years, he is still learning.
